Follow-up Comment #5, bug #51890 (project screen):
it doesn't cause a bug, but it is wasteful, especially when using a setup that
is supposed to be "utf-8 sane". i basically noticed screen emitting
extraneous content when debugging terminal emulator code and i wasn't getting
the exact content my program was writing (e.g. i told it to write two
codepoints, but i was getting back four, and i wanted to know why my program
was "broken").
