==== Description: ====
SkOP is an hardware-accelerated viewer for HEALPix sky maps.
The HEALPix pixelisation scheme samples the sphere into equal area pixels.
Pixel values are then stored into a one dimensionnal vectors. SkOP provides
convenient vizualisation of data stored in this way (usually astrophysical
data, see e.g. the data of the WMAP space mission).
The projection of data on the sphere is computed directly on the GPU through
an implementation of HEALPix routines in GLSL shaders. Performing the
projection on the GPU allows fast (real-time) and flexible rendering of the
data at full resolution. It avoids the time consuming step of projecting the
data (using the CPU) in a texture that will be rendered by the GPU.
The user interface is made in Qt, and already implements a few features like
screenshots, color scale adjustement, map switching. Many others are still on
the roadmap. The aim is to provide an efficient and free visualisation
software for the data of the incoming Planck space mission.
==== Other Software Required: ====
Qt4 + GPLv3 + http://www.qtsoftware.com/
cfitsio + (GPLv2/other) + http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/fitsio
GLEW + (Modified BSD License, the Mesa 3-D License, the Khronos License and
GNU GPL) + http://glew.sourceforge.net
==== Other Comments: ====
The software can be used with the mesa software rendering driver, but
requires hardware acceleration to be run confortably. According to
http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/RadeonFeature this is already available in
free drivers for some ATI cards, but I have not been able to test it yet.
