==== Description: ====
`local-install' is a program that automatically configures, compiles, and
installs (in particular, GNU) source packages.

Many GNU/Linux distributions provide their own software repository software
which installs site-wide software. Many times, it is hard to install software
which has not been packaged to be used specifically with this package manager
software because such out-of-band installations might clutter or interfere
with the managed installations.

`local-install' is not a software repository, nor a package manager. It is a
tool to help users install (and uninstall) packages which use the GNU
autoconf/automake system to any of the user's writable directories. The
typical usage scenarios are:
* When a user wishes to install/run a program, but does not have
root/administration privileges.
* When a user wishes to install/run software that is not included in the
site's software repository.

`local-install' will by default create a directory structure which looks like
this:
        $HOME/local/
        $HOME/local/<path> -> ../var/pkg/<package-name>/install/<path>
        $HOME/local/var/
        $HOME/local/var/pkg
        $HOME/local/var/pkg/<package-name>
        $HOME/local/var/pkg/<package-name>/build
        $HOME/local/var/pkg/<package-name>/install
        $HOME/local/var/pkg/<package-name>/source

`local-install' is incomplete. More information can be found in the TODO
file.

`local-install' is distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL version 2.

The first (and latest) version of `local-install' can be downloaded from
http://peltkore.net/~vegard/local-install-1.0.tar.gz
