Description:
------------
The purpose if to create a replacement for the profile module of Python that
will be free software. The current profiler module is not under a free
license (at least according to the Debian Free Software Guidelines). This
project was proposed to the Google Summer of Code project and subsequently
accepted.

The aim is to create a drop in replacement for the profiler so that any
software depending on it (such as ipython) will be able to have full
functionality again when using entirely free software. Several other
improvements users have been complaining about like the speed of the profiler
will be (hopefully) be adresssed too.

The project itself is still in it's planning phase so no code does exist yet.
The mentor appointed to me by the Python Software Foundation requested to use
the BSD or MIT licence for the project. Following the guidelines given on the
gnu.org website I choose the MIT/X11 license.

The project is shown on the Python website:
http://wiki.python.org/moin/SummerOfCode under the "Profile Replacement"
heading. There is some more information why the current profiler is not
free.

Other Software Required:

  Python
