Description:
------------
  Global Intellectual Library (GIL)

is a new approach to creating world-wide

scientific workspace and library infrastructure.

The main purpose of GIL is to provide reliable, crossplatform,

distributed scientific workspace based on new system and math ideas

of global library network (to be decribed in project documentation).

Here we'd like to produce an open source branch of the project,

crossplatform, mainly maintained by Python server kernel and client
packages.

Concrete goals of the project:

1. Develop core logics, components and documentation of GIL.

2. Develop crossplatform client (GIL IDE) with Python as the main

programming language/platform, providing several GUI shells: Web, Win32
and X11.

3. Develop simple GIL server conceivably with Python,

Firebird/Postgre as relational db engine and HTTP/SOAP/... network.

4. Investigate and made integrated tools for importing common mathematical

   standards: LaTeX, MathML etc.

Short description of GIL features:

GIL is a free ww system of sharing _structured_ documents (_not files_)

with infinitelly deep structure. GIL is a tool of easy creating global

scientific library, providing easy and fast access to any information item

from any discipline of science at the common GIL environment,

combining them to provide new integrated knowledge.

>From system point of view, GIL propose a new way of distributing data,

maintaining resources and tracking document behavior, getting

advantage in computational and network resources.

Referenced standards, languages and technologies:

Python, C++, Bison,

Common network protocols: HTTP, SOAP,

Relational, some times, object db: Firebird, Postgre (planned), Oracle (for
large servers),

XML: XSLT, XMLSchema

GUI technologies: Windows, .NET Framework, Qt, Web (HTML, XML/XSLT).

OS: UNIX, Windows.

The main application of GIL:

Maintaining ww free distributed intellectual library ---

new base for supporting inter-disciplinary scientific research.

Keywords:

scientific workspace and workflow,

distributed peer-to-peer network,

file and structured document sharing,

global library.

Other Software Required:
------------------------
Python, XML tools (parser, XSLT, XMLSchema), Firebird or Postgre client and
server.
