users frequently want to download releases using HTTP."
Note that ftp.gnu.org provides HTTP access.
"Storing the releases in CVS makes it easy to synchronize between a few HTTP
mirrors."
As I mentioned this is not how we designed the service. CVS is not exactly
suited for that job - managing 300MB of binary data, that is.
Instead, you could use something like "wget --mirror", or use the Savannah
download area which supports rsync. You could also ask address@hidden about
enabling rsync access from ftp.gnu.org for projects that manage mirrors
themselves.
