Follow-up Comment #7, sr #103933 (project administration):

Will arch -wipe preserve URLs?  Because if not, it will be a loss for older
messages that refer to them -- we have many of those.

gmane has a nice method of both weeding spam, regularly regenerating article
numbers in order (at long intervals) but still also preserving old URLs.  I
don't know how appropriate this external resource may be for the GNU project,
but its features have made me use its links.

Weeding the mboxes is a trivial one-time task; I started that for the libtool
lists for a mere private copy already.
