I've been thinking of two possible schema for this (displaying them is not a problem since, as Eugene said, CSS solves that neatly):

I forgot to mention, that I like #1 also because it would be kind of neat to be able to use the command line to download news files & read them with a text editor. I'm sure that a BASH script with some regular expressions could solve that problem. It look for any news that is more recent than the latest news that was last downloaded.

This could be a way of encouraging users to make use of the command line.
