Hi,

Sorry I had not been checking this list for a couple weeks.

I also contacted Buffalo and got the "we only support Windows"
responce. What I ended up doing was installing the hacked firmware
(some one mentioned this fireware in the thread), which gives a ssh
server, and a user space nfs server. The terastation was going to be
used for storing case-sencitive data other than just backups from
rdiff-backup so the samba was never going to work. I now mount the
terastation as a nfs share and rdiff-backup works like a charm. I also
shutdown the httpd and smbd dameaons to free up some more resources. I
don't believe that the firmware modifies the samba configuration so I
ran the test you requested and the output is below. Case sencitive is
set to "no", case preserving is set to "yes."

address@hidden:~# testparm /etc/samba/smb.conf
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf

If Andrew doesn't find a way to interrogate its smbd remotely, there
might be another way. It appears the terastation is hackable :)

There are hardware/firmware hacks as well as a page on how to gain root
access:

Cheers, Dave
