what I do is backport the latest stable rpm with alien.
the only problem with that is that you have to edit
/usr/bin/rdiff-backup to point to python2.2 instead of python after you
install the .deb file.

alien is the easiest to use.
ideally a proper backport of the unstable version would be good.
/me goes away and searches.
well what do you know, there is a backport already available:

from www.apt-get.org
--------------
# Backports of unstable and testing packages to stable, and unstable
packages to testing. Sideports of unofficial from Christian Marillat
(patent-contaminated multimedia software) and various other places.
Bleeding edge releases of official and soon-to-be official Debian
packages. Repackaging of unstable and testing Linux kernels for stable,
and with additional package optimized for VIA C3 chip. Most build for
i386 and some (expecially the Marillat packages) build powerpc unstable.
(Added 2003-09-28, last checked 2003-10-18) (Download as text) -

maintainer.
Packages in database: acl, amavisd-new, amavisd-new-milter, analog,
apache, apache-common, apache-dev, apache-doc, apache-perl, apache-ssl, ...
Architectures: all, i386, powerpc
deb http://debian.jones.dk woody misc
deb http://debian.jones.dk sarge misc
deb http://debian.jones.dk sid misc

# Matches:
rdiff-backup 0.12.5-1.99.jones.0 (i386)
rdiff-backup 0.12.5-1.99.jones.1 (i386)

do you can use the woody line above and get recent rdiff-backups!

that should do the trick,

dave
