Not sure what .xsession is, but in .xinitrc (called by the plain
startx), the window manager needs to be the last app called. You have to
put mythfrontend before ratpoison. Ratpoison should not be followed by
&, mythfrontend should be.
A .xinitrc could be:
mythfrontend &
exec ratpoison
