Okay it's definitely a regression - git bisect points to the following commit:

    ide/macio: QOM'ify MacIO IDE

    It was not qdev'ified before. Turn it into a SysBusDevice.
    Embed them into the MacIO devices.

If you try booting the openSUSE ISO mentioned in my previous email then the crash occurs at some point during the "Starting udev..." prompt.
