Please look at how NBD supports URIs. Something like
sheepdog[+tcp|+unix]://[host:port]/vdiname[/snapid|/tag][?socket=path]
or
sheepdog[+tcp|+unix]://[host:port]/vdiname[?socket=path][#snapid|#tag]
would be similar to what we use for NBD and Gluster.
