[Qemu-devel] console on stdio?

What option should I give to get the guest host on the host stdio?
I want to launch qemu from a terminal and have access to the console
there.

I tried -serial stdio and -monitor stdio but this gives:

chardev: opening backend "stdio" failed
qemu: could not open serial device 'stdio': Invalid argument
