Linux had that too long ago (2.2.x or so?), and there was a knob to tune
that limit.

But even shmem allocation failing shouldn't be a fundamental problem,
vnc can just fallback to non-shm mode then.

Tuning is no problem, it just needs root access to change it and a reboot. But i don't like the thought of programs manipulating my system defaults :)
