[snip]

I get all the way through the installation, qemu warm reboots
and it goes through some configuration, warm reboots again,
then actually does run WinXP (beautiful). I get to the desktop
and can run programs and configure the system. I can even do
warm reboots and get all the way back to the desktop again, as
long as I don't shut down qemu.

But, as soon as I shut qemu down and try to restart it, then
it doesn't boot anymore.

I had exactly the same problems you mentioned.
There have been some talks on the subject in this list a few days ago but now I don't know if this problem is being addressed. Anyway, a quick and dirty fix that worked for me is to comment out line 1896 in hw/ide.c (the call to bdrv_set_geometry_hint function).
After recompiling the CVS source code, everything came back to normal.

I commented out the line (line 1896 was indeed the function call you
listed above), recompiled, and reinstalled, but it made no difference
for me. Same thing. This is in source from CVS HEAD. I'll also try
that with 0.6.0 source and see what happens, but I'm not real hopeful.
Thanks for the tip though.
