I get all the way through the installation, qemu warm reboots
and it goes through some configuration, warm reboots again,
then actually does run WinXP (beautiful). I get to the desktop
and can run programs and configure the system. I can even do
warm reboots and get all the way back to the desktop again, as
long as I don't shut down qemu.
But, as soon as I shut qemu down and try to restart it, then
it doesn't boot anymore.
I had exactly the same problems you mentioned.
There have been some talks on the subject in this list a few days ago
but now I don't know if this problem is being addressed.
Anyway, a quick and dirty fix that worked for me is to comment out line
1896 in hw/ide.c (the call to bdrv_set_geometry_hint function).
After recompiling the CVS source code, everything came back to normal.
