Finally got it working. On the image that wass up when you first posted 
this message all I got were cdrom boot error messages with qemu. The 
later image worked fine.

On my xp1600 it took 2 minutes 54 from boot: to the shell prompt in qemu 
compared to 40 seconds running native on this hardware.

Did a comparison with gcc 3.3.5 default CFLAGS and gcc 3.4.2 -O2 
-mtune=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer. Was wondering it would have made 
any difference.
