Jeff, you can use dd to create a large empty file...
This is what I used on Cygwin:
dd of=hda.img bs=1M count=6000 seek=6000
to make a 6GB image file, on Linux/Unix you may have to add
if=/dev/zero (I'm not sure).
Windows set-up should recognize this as a hard disk with no partition
table, when you use hda.img as your QEMU -hda device.
