Hi,

If rar v3 has ECC built-in, why are par files still used?

Because (on Linux):
- par2 is an excellent and higly customizable program/tool and free!,
- par2 comes in a mulitithreaded variant, on a quad core is runs 4 times faster, the linux rar is single threaded :-(.

Really? par2cmdline v0.4 in Debian seems to be single-threaded, but now I found it. I'll have to file a bug report with Debian to try to get it into the repository.

Anyway, it wouldn't currently help me much, since pan's eating one core (8 threads, I guess is the culprit). Besides, a little shell "programming" lets me par-repair and unrar a set of related files (usually TV episodes) while I'm off doing something else like nethack.

- par2 can be used on any file
