If you've never had spellchecking working (you didn't answer that, you 
said you'd never seen the error before, but that's not the same as saying 
spellcheck was working), it's likely that the previous version you were 
using had spellcheck disabled, while the new version has it enabled and 
you've just not setup for it.

If that's the case, all you should need to do is set your LANG variable 
as mentioned (en_GB, I just checked, there are additional variants of 
that as well, -ize vs -ise, accents or not... but en_GB is the norm for 
Great Britain) and ensure you have the correct aspell dictionary 
installed.  See http://aspell.net .

If you've had it working (it shows up in pan as red underlines on words 
it thinks are misspelled), I'd start with the same thing, reinstalling 
and setting the variable, and worry about troubleshooting only if that 
fails.
