Will do, probably this week (today's going to be a busy day for me) - 
mostly I wanted to start by seeing if anyone had seen these issues first.

Maybe a greyed out value - that's how much of the software I use that 
supports this type of feature does - if you multi-select and look at 
attributes of objects (say in eDirectory administration interfaces), the 
value is blank if it's different across different objects.  If it's not 
changed, then the value is left alone on all entries, allowing you to do 
things like change the directory but not the posting profile.

Yeah an arbitrary grouping would work for this as well - just the 
arbitrary groups set up could be centered around news servers - but that 
would be a user setup, not something to be coded.  I like the more 
generic approach.
