Check out the command line options.  You may be able to do that with a
cron job now.  (I don't know the details or if it's fully possible, but
some stuff is, from the command line now.)

Other than that, the usual recommendation is to use a tool more
appropriate to the job, for that sort of thing.  IOW, run your own news
server and configure it to do that for the groups you want, then connect
to it from pan.  I know a number of pan users do that, based on comments
here, but again, haven't done it myself so can't provide details.
