Straying off-topic, I'm wondering why you don't use 4.x.

I used gcc-3.4.6 until 4.1.x became stable.  I never had any trouble with
512M RAM using either compiler.

I was never aware of how many bugs were lurking in gcc until I started
using multiple OS's and noticing how many different patches are out there.

AFAICT there is no such thing as 'a gcc bug' without specifying which OS
and which gcc version and which patchset.  It's enough to drive even a
sane developer to drink (not that I know any sane developers).
