[Pan-users] Unify/gather threads

I've been working since March with a maximum guru on a large project on
comp.mail.pine, which has required changing threads a/o starting new ones
many times already, and will probably require several more.

They're already at the point where I find it a royal pain to find or check
them all -- even if I first sort by author -- and I imagine those third
persons trying to follow along have even more trouble. (The guru, who
uses Pine for her newsreader as well as mailer, also runs a variety of
other softwares, at least one of which gives her something she calls saved
searches; but I expect it'd be another enormous project to walk me or
others through it.)

I want a way to pull all the threads together in the header pane. Somehow.

All I could think of is for each of us (and anyone chiming in) to start
putting some specific short word at the left end of all new threads, and
the same word with a "(was ...)" for all new follow-ups.

Seems like it'd work -- but be kind of a kludge. So I have two questions.

First, is there a better way Pan (I still run 0.14.2.91) can do what I
want for me, by some means not too fierce to mention to a sub-technoid?
Merely using Watch Thread helps, but is already inadequate. Scoring loses
me every time.

Second, is there a better way that will work for all newsreaders? Or even
for Pan and Pine? (On that group, of course, many do use Pine for reading
news as well as email. I did myself -- till I discovered Pan.)
