Guess it could be an artifact of the gmane mail-to-news gateway though...

You pre-suppose that he was on the machine with Pan installed, when he
wrote the email. I sometimes post questions at lunchtime from work, on
Windows, about issues I have with Linux at home.

Hrumph. I ssh (via putty) from the work doze box to the home linux box and post from there. No confusion.
