I don't know if its exactly what you want, but take a look at
getbinnews, which was designed round this sort of need.
Here is a list of features from the webpage:

Its built around gtk and doesn't have a "newsreader" interface and you
could get ads running unless you also run a proxy filter (such as
bfilter).
