"Loading article {x} of {x}" (article count was about 12000).

Of _all_ threads ... some copy past work will be required ;)

Ok, did that. It produced a 7.5 Mb logfile ;) [want me to mail it ?],
and the messages scrolling by between gui freeze, and the new "Sorting
messages" status-bar-entry was:
---
(articlelist.c:2187:articlelist_new_inc_nolock():articlelist_new_inc_nolock)(thread
 0x8168a90)(time 19:19:13)(depth   1) TRACE: - articlelist_new_inc_nolock^M
(articlelist.c:2176:articlelist_new_inc_nolock():articlelist_new_inc_nolock)(thread
 0x8168a90)(time 19:19:13)(depth   2) TRACE: + articlelist_new_inc_nolock^M
---
Got a couple thousand of those.
