I'm reading via the archives, so this is a hand crafted in-reply-to:
sorry if it doesn't work.

Several apps have been discussed on the list in the past including
Evolution, Pine, Elm, Mozilla Mail, and my personal favorite -
Polarbar. I like Polarbar because since it is java based, it's cross
  platform.

The "unix way" would be to set up an nntp server that reads your
mailbox and presents it as private newsgroups. This would allow us
to leverage the superior threading capabilities of a newsreader to
allow one mailbox to manage several discussions. You could then use
some filters to map subscribed list traffic to dedicated newsgroups.

GNUS does this, I think, but the barrier to entry is high: I use emacs
religiously and have not had the courage to set it up.

You'd also need to give pan better profile management: you want to
merge !disjoint! (because the general case is hard, IIRC) news-feeds
into one interface, and you also want to allow different outgoing
profiles -- my identity when uploading mp3s should not be the same as
when I engage in poltical debate with old friends.

Some of this may be in place: I've hit my sweet-spot with 0.11.4 and
gtk 1.4, and I'll delay fixing the problem until it breaks.

Johan
