ok cool, I just wished I had someway to send that msg or find out what
chars it was bellyaching about, it of course looked like plain ascii to me

looks like "" to me :-)
I assume the chars were in the post I was replying to, I guess? I did
paste something into the msg (from mozilla) I'd assume the kde "clipboard"
or whatever wouldn't carry over any charset encoding from a webpage ...
