Follow-up Comment #5, patch #8951 (project octave):
I don't have Matlab at hand, I just read the most recent doc. As Octave has
never supported lighting, there is no backward compatibility issue here and we
should implement the current ML behavior in my opinion: users who want the old
ML behavior just have to change normalmode to vertexnormalmode.
For facenormal of non-planar (even if Octave doesn't currently support those)
or eventually concave polygons the Newill method (see e.g. [1]), that is used
by ML (see link in comment #3), seams to be more appropriate than the cross
product. Did you have a look at it?
