Follow-up Comment #5, patch #8033 (project octave): Thanks for your remarks. The function is currently being thoroughly tested as part of the upcoming doctest package. I will prepare a patch for oct-parse.in.yy with your remarks and any improvements which are going to be found in the tests. I don't understand the code for unwind_protect and buffer_error_messages in the functions eval and evalin.
