Follow-up Comment #1, patch #7999 (project octave): I haven't had time to look at this in much detail, but keep in mind Matlab compatibility. http://www.mathworks.com/help/signal/ref/fftfilt.html The "Algorithms" section at the bottom of the page describes how the FFT size argument (or lack thereof) is handled by the routine. In particular it does explicitly say that it will round the user-specified value up to the next largest power of 2.
