Follow-up Comment #1, patch #7987 (project octave):

Thanks Terry.

I'll have a look at them later this week (no time until after April 4th), to:
- Adapt coding style to Octave conventions
- Fix header (=> texinfo help text) and put a GPL section in it
- See if some tests can be devised
(all of those of course if you agree with it)
- See if I can do s/th about the issues you mention
- Put them in the io package. I was planning to make a 1.2.2 release later in
April anyway, so your contribution fits in nicely.
