Follow-up Comment #4, patch #7870 (project octave):

I realized we're reinventing the wheel here, please read:
http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/manual/html_node/Executing-a-File.html

According to the link, the execlp() function does exactly the same job with
the plus of searching the PATH for the program when no "/" is encountered in
the first argument.

A nicer diff is attached.
