is the new csape file also yet part of the splines package? Or how can I incorporate it into splines and octave?

I figured out the reason. The default condition in csape was zero first derivatives at the endpoints, which isn't a great choice. I ​modified it to be the same as what Matlab uses. If you now use the new version from https://sourceforge.net/p/octave/splines/ci/default/tree/inst/csape.m?format=raw you should get the same result as Matlab.
