Difference between Ctrl-d and <Menu> File| Exit

What is different between closing the Octave GUI using Ctrl-d in the
terminal, and clicking File | Exit on the main menu bar?

I'm asking because on my Win7 64bit box at work, the latter consistently
leads to a crash while Ctrl-d in the terminal always ends Octave gracefully.
So there *is* a difference. 

However, on my WinXP box at home, and my own Win7 64bit laptop, there's no
notable difference, and in any event, no crash. (Go figure.)

It may be related to Windows' UAC (at work that is active, but I've disabled
it on my laptop).

(UAC = User Account Control, a Windows service (~"daemon") that alarms the
user when a program wants to make changes to sensitive spots in Windows (on
hard disk, in the registry). Most people find it fairly annoying.)
