I know, thanks, but it doesn't work on my Mageia 2 box. That's why I wrote
"...functional menu editor".
(Or more precise: it shows another menu than I see when I click the Menu
button on my screen panel. I've hunted down all of my profile and all other
usual places (/etc, /share, ...), but couldn't find a match for the menu
shown by lxmed)

That's exactly the issue I'm complaining about. Octave needs that setting
selected; w/o it won't start up. But the terminal (which catches some Octave
messages) remains visible once the GUI is shown and can then be closed w/o
Octave closing as well.
It is a bit annoying to see that terminal being around for no use.
