Ok ... I tried "export LANG=C", and it doesn't help with "make html"
inside of doc.  (make all is still running, so I can't tell you
whether that works or not.)

However, I noticed that my version of Texinfo is apparently quite old
- -- I'll try to update and see if that helps.
