Speedup in symmetric diagonally dominant solvers

In case you missed it, this bit of news seems to be making the rounds:

I guess Octave will just wait until the Fortran libraries implement
the algorithm. I mention it here because I'm curious to hear a
dispassionate appraisal of the importance of this discovery. I'm not
able to give one myself at a glance.
