Lee has come up with a first proposal for a logo. Please take a look and give your opinions.

I hate to criticize volunteer work, but I do not like this logo.
The logo clearly shows two objects, one penetrating another,
and in no way it associate in my head with the original "sombrero"
logo. It also does not associate with any mathematical object
either.

I'd have to agree with Dmitri on that one--no go for logo. (Not that the
effort isn't appreciated.)

One suggestion for a logo would be to start from the other end :)
I.e. since the original logo is called "sombrero", perhaps
we can have a stylized actual sombrero (a hat, not the math curve)
for the logo.

The thing about the sombrero is it suggests more to me a plotting utility. But
Octave in concept is more math (discrete) in nature. Someone may have
mentioned this in the past, but how about a series of level curves sketching
out what looks like an 8 or infinity on the two dimensional plane of a 3-D
trajectory, tilting 60 degrees to the right. I know Octave is named for a
person, but there is still the obvious immediate impression of 8. People could
ponder, Is it an 8 for Octave? Or an infinity for infinitive possibilities?...
not to be too market-conscious self-aggrandizing. Could there be some play on
8ctave, or 0ctoove (where the oo is supposed to be an infinity symbol)?
