I'd be happy to have changes so that the libraries are built from sets
of object files instead of by adding one object file at a time, but
only if the dependency information is still managed correctly.  I
don't think that is a problem for the libraries in the liboctave and
src directories, but it may be a bit tricky to do for libcruft, which
has the source in multiple subdirectories.

Making parallel builds possible would also be nice.
