What happens when you enter the command
javachk ("jvm")
in the command window?

Did your Java environment change recently?
If your script has been working flawlessly for months but is now breaking
things, *something* must have changed.

BTW I thought that I had entered another comment here but I donĀ“t see it. So
I repeat the steps outlined in it:

Rather than renaming  __init_io__.m , edit the PKG_ADD file in the io package
directory so that the only line it contains is commented out and reads like
this:

## __init_io__ ()

and save it back.
Restart Octave, and try if you can use xlsread and xlswrite with always
specifying the "oct" interface.
