Follow-up Comment #14, bug #47680 (project octave):

Admittedly, Matlab's OO was not very consistent (and not everything is
documented as you found out). Especially when classdef was just introduced.
E.g., static methods stopped working over versions, the rules on overloading
private/protected methods changed all the time, etc. 

Glad to see this being worked on.
