Follow-up Comment #5, bug #55643 (project octave):

You might also try


system ("nproc");
system ("nproc --all");


at the Octave prompt to see if you get different results in Octave's runtime
environment for some reason.

If you're getting the same result with your own compiled copy of Octave 6 from
the default branch, that's using a pretty up to date version of gnulib.
