Follow-up Comment #7:

I pushed a change on the stable branch that I think addresses this:

The correct value of LDFLAGS is restored and used in all builds. The LFLAGS
value is still used in the build until it is removed. A warning is printed if
the user explicitly calls 'mkoctfile -p LFLAGS' or if LFLAGS is overridden
from the environment. This should help migrate users away from relying on
LFLAGS and let it be deleted painlessly in a future version.
