Follow-up Comment #13, bug #39479 (project octave):
The file can be updated automatically from the metadata, but that is a server
side script. Separate that part of the problem, and assume that there is such
a script and it generates a file (your choice as to format). I was imagining
starting with the client side and writing the code to parse and display this
file. When that is working, then we can go back and work on the server side
script to produce it.
The file ~/.octave_packages is generated by the pkg scripts. Try
pkg install -forge symbolic
which will install the symbolic package and also create ~/.octave_packages.
