Follow-up Comment #27, bug #49247 (project octave): I pushed the changeset to the stable branch here: https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/5f321f799cb1 In the meantime I managed to get the gtk2 style to work via qt5c (breaking the style selection in the Octave properties on the way). It looks like gtk2 uses the border property to style the buttons. The border seems to cover the background color completely. The attached patch sets a manual border for the pushbutton objects. But the result doesn't look very good. And it also makes all other styles look worse...
