Follow-up Comment #1, bug #55287 (project octave):

My system (fc29 octave  __octave_config_info__ ("hg_id")
dd97dc559679, graphics_toolkit qt) behaved somewhat differently:

1. loop ran to about 4500 iterations before the system
   screen froze. There was some swapping, but not enough
   to be a resource problem.

2. Only way to recover was to login from another machine.
   This took some time, but finally, shutdown -r now
   worked.

There was some resource usage which essentially locked
the system.

It would definitely be a good idea to determine the problem.
