Follow-up Comment #2, bug #54622 (project octave):

dlmread() is now the heart of importdata(), for ASCII.  I don't see and BIST
for dlmread(), there probably should be.

Could you print out the values of a, d and h?  Just copy the lines of code
(after the main check) without running the test specifically.  I'm curious
what 1x1 result a is.  Is it all one big string of text perhaps?  I can't
understand how the algorithm would get stuck reading 3.1 and nothing else
beyond that first tab character.
