Follow-up Comment #7, bug #54390 (project octave):

I can try -std=legacy to see if that eliminates the warnings.

If it does, that might be useful to automatically resolve this for any version
of gfortran that we support. I didn't read closely enough, it looks like
'legacy' is equivalent to 'gnu', minus deprecation warnings, which might suit
this situation.

If that works and everyone is ok with that, then we can add that to the
configure script when gfortran is detected and not have to update any code.
